Insights from a Working Parent: Embracing Values, Goals and Unexpected Superpowers!

Shirley Sutton exemplifies the epitome of a remarkable parent who fearlessly embraces the delicate balance of work and family life.

Throughout our discussion, she generously shared invaluable insights, surprising qualities, and the extraordinary superpowers she has unearthed within herself, empowering her to navigate the ever-demanding world of being a working parent.

What are some unexpected qualities or superpowers you've discovered within yourself that have helped you navigate the challenges of juggling work and family?

“As a working parent juggling work and family life has brought out some crazy hidden talents in me. I can keep going, non-stop! I've become a master at adapting to whatever comes my way, always coming up with fresh ideas to handle my job and be there for my family.”

Superpowers? I would say resilience,I bounce back from setbacks and show my son how to be tough.”

Who are the key players in your support network?

“I have to give a big shout out to my siblings and parents. They've been game-changers on this parenting rollercoaster, helping me tackle all the crazy logistics and lending a hand whenever I needed it.”

“Back in the day, when remote work or WFH wasn't a thing, handling a full-time job as a single parent was like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded. But having my family nearby? Priceless! They’ve been my rock!”

“I’ve also been extremely lucky with my employers. They understand the whole work-life balance thing and have been so flexible. Allowing me to adjust my schedule to handle school drop-offs and pick-ups, which has been a total lifeline. I get to be there for all those precious moments with my kid, soaking up the everyday joys while keeping up with my professional duties. I'm one lucky parent, no doubt about it!”

With so many demands on our time and energy, it's crucial to prioritise what truly matters. Shirley shared some brilliant strategies she uses to stay on track.

  • “When it comes to priorities my family always takes the top spot. I know how quickly childhood flies by. I make it a point to be present for my son while he still needs me.

  • I'm a goal setter! I set clear objectives that align with my core values and what really matters to me and my loved ones. It gives me a sense of purpose which helps me understand the urgent requests from the things that truly matter in the long run.

  • I don't get caught up in the noise of everyday demands. Instead, I focus on activities that make a lasting impact.

  • And let me tell you, when I'm at work, I make sure I'm fully locked in and crystal clear on what I need to achieve. No messing around there”

And sticking with your core values and goal setting, how do you combine that into finding time for yourselves, your hobbies, and passions?

“I prioritise my health and well-being. Early morning walks and gym sessions have become non-negotiable rituals in my schedule. These activities not only keep me physically fit but also invigorate my mind and replenish my energy reserves.”

“Finding the time and energy for self-care is crucial, it allows me to show up as the best version of myself for my family, career, and all the passions that drive me.”

Shirley wants to inspire future generations.

“As a working parent, I know that I can show the world that you can do both - be a dedicated professional and a loving parent. Through my work, I'm all about advocating for diversity, inclusion, and work-life balance. I create supportive environments where everyone's well-being and contributions are valued. I implement policies and initiatives like flexible work arrangements and parental leave to make sure my team knows they're important.

I hope I'm inspiring other leaders and organisations to step up and prioritise their employees' success and happiness too.”

We must cherish the time we have with our kids!

“Beyond my professional career, I'm hoping to be an example, instilling values in my son and those around me that guide them to focus on what they care about. I believe in heart-to-heart talks, encouraging people to pursue their passions, set goals, and embrace diversity. I want the next generation to believe in themselves and go after what they want while keeping a healthy balance between their dreams and responsibilities. “

“I hope I'm inspiring others to join in and shape a brighter future for our families, our communities, and all the generations to come. "
