Parenthood and Leadership; not too dissimilar: A Conversation with Ryan Kelly

Two worlds that demand constant navigation and adaptation; the ever-evolving landscape of parenthood and leadership.

In my thought-provoking discussion with Ryan Kelly, the ingenious mind behind Creative Natives, we explored the complexities of modern parenting, the shifting landscape of family dynamics and the challenges faced by working parents today. Ryan graciously shares invaluable lessons applicable to both individuals and organisations alike.

Family Values in a Modern World

Ryan opens up about the dynamic nature of family values in his household, highlighting the evolution that occurred with the arrival of Magnus, his son.

It’s not just about material provision; it’s about being present and, although a little boring, approaching the day-to-day family life like a ‘well-oiled machine’ with structures and processes in place to navigate the juggling act effectively.

This approach, though pragmatic, ensures that essential family time is preserved amidst busy schedules.

“It can be challenging maintaining equilibrium between work and family, it’s a delicate situation, one that requires constant recalibration and a willingness to adapt.”

Fatherhood: A Catalyst for Change

Ryan’s journey into fatherhood wasn’t just a personal milestone; it transformed his perspective and became a catalyst for change within Creative Natives.

Through firsthand experience, Ryan gained insight into the harsh realities faced by returning parents in the workforce. This empathy translated into action, with Creative Natives spearheading initiatives aimed at supporting working parents, combating pregnancy discrimination, and fostering a more inclusive work culture.

Supporting Working Parents: A Business Imperative

Ryan’s passion for advocating for parental rights is palpable.

He speaks candidly about the systemic challenges parents face, from rigid workplace policies to societal stigmas. Yet, amidst the uphill battle, there’s a glimmer of hope — a commitment to driving meaningful change, one policy at a time.

By prioritising policies that facilitate work-life balance, organisations can foster a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture. Ryan’s commitment to transparency and accountability in parental leave policies serves as a model for businesses striving to create a fair and equitable environment for all employees.

For Ryan, supporting working parents isn't just a moral imperative—it's smart business.

Self-Care: The Ultimate Act of Rebellion?!

The conversation takes a poignant turn as Ryan shares his personal journey towards self-care and boundary-setting. In a world where hustle culture reigns supreme, Ryan’s candid reflections offer a much-needed reminder: self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential.

From therapy sessions to lifestyle adjustments, he's rewriting the narrative of success—one boundary at a time.  By prioritising his well-being, Ryan not only sets an example for others but also ensures that he can show up fully, both as a parent and a leader.

Championing Change, One Step at a Time

As our conversation draws to a close, Ryan leaves us with a powerful message:

“Change begins with awareness, with a willingness to confront the status quo head-on”

Whether it’s advocating for parental rights or fostering a more inclusive workplace culture, every step forward, no matter how small, counts.

A notable aspect of our conversation was Ryan’s advocacy for breaking gender stereotypes and promoting diversity within the workplace. He highlighted the stigma associated with male caregivers and emphasized the need for societal acceptance and celebration of diverse family structures.

In Ryan’s world, leadership isn’t just about driving profits; it’s about driving progress, about creating a world where all employees can thrive both personally and professionally. And in that pursuit, he stands as a beacon of hope—a reminder that change is possible, one conversation, one policy, one step at a time.
